Home Remedies for Snoring

Home remedies for snoring can be very successful and some are quite bizarre! One of the most popular home remedies is to prevent the snorer from rolling onto their back during the night and decrease the chances of snoring. This can be achieved by placing a pillow behind the snorer to keep them on their side, but can also make for a poor nights sleep for the snorer as it prevents the natural sleep patterns and movements during the night. Another more extreme method of preventing someone from lying on their back is to sew a ball into the back of the night clothes, this proves to be so uncomfortable that the snorer will automatically turn themselves back onto their side to sleep.

Home remedies for snoring also include the use of essential oils such as eucalyptus which helps breathing, this can either be gently rubbed under the nose at bedtime or placed in an oil burner in the room. It is advisable to use an electric oil burner rather than an open tea light candle to reduce the possibility of a fire being started. Oils can also be poured over crystals or cones and placed on a bedside table near the snorer which will produce similar effects, alternatively oils sprinkled directly onto the pillow may help.

Another home remedy to help prevent snoring is to use a herbal sleep pillow. There are several different types available. Aromatic herbs, such as lavender and marjoram can be sew into a cloth sachet which are placed inside the pillow slip. For those who are able to obtain hops (used to make some types of beer) will also give off a heady aroma which helps to prevent snoring. The flowers from lime trees are yet another alternative, by putting dried lime tree flowers into the pillow slip and also drinking an infusion of lime tree tea is said to aid sleep which may also lessen snoring.

An extreme home remedy for snoring is to tape the snorer's mouth shut! However, this should not be used for people who snore due to sleep apnoea or have breathing difficulties.

Home remedies for snoring can also include changing lifestyle which includes change of diet, reducing the amount of spicy foods and eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables may also help reduce excess weight, which may alleviate snoring. Quitting smoking and not consuming alcohol prior to sleep may also be an effective way to stop snoring.
